NVD KAC UNS(R)
The NVD KAC UNS(R) (Universal Night Sight – Range / Short Range) line revolutionized military and law enforcement shooting. Manufactured by Night Vision Devices and Knight's Armament Company, these clip-on devices mount directly in front of standard daytime optics. This lets shooters use their regular daytime scopes at night without changing their zero.
Knight's Armament introduced the Knight Vision line to fill a critical gap in 24/7 combat capabilities. Before this, shooters had to swap daytime scopes for bulky, dedicated night-vision scopes, which caused them to lose their zero (the scope's alignment). The success of the initial UNS designs led to heavy-duty military variants like the AN/PVS-27 and the AN/PVS-30, which are designed for long-range sniper rifles. To meet the demand for lighter and more compact units, the UNS(R) (and the sub-compact UNS-SR) was born. These scaled-down versions were built for short- to medium-range engagements, allowing them to fit nicely on smaller firearms like submachine guns and carbines. The UNS(R) acts as a unity (1x) sight in front of your day scope. It supports magnifications ranging from short distances up to 10x for the SR, and higher for the larger models. The units use advanced Generation III image intensifier tubes (often L3 or Elbit systems) in green or white phosphor to turn ambient starlight into a clear, bright image. The UNS(R) is built to withstand heavy recoil, handling everything from 5.56mm carbines to powerful .50 caliber rifles.
