SIMRAD GN-1

The Simrad GN-1 isn't a typical Simrad marine product but a rugged, retro-futuristic night vision goggle from the Simrad (Simonsen Radio AS) Norwegian defense electronics history, featuring a unique off-center objective lens and complex internal optics to pipe light to its image intensifier tube, designed for military use with variants like the vehicle-mounted GN-1C, showcasing Simrad's early innovation beyond just marine navigation.

While Simrad is famous for modern marine navigation, the GN-1 is a product from its earlier defense division, showcasing their expertise in optics and electronics for demanding military applications, establishing them as innovators long before their dominance in yachting electronics.

The GN-1 is a night vision device with a single, off-center objective lens and two eyepieces, differing from common binocular-style NVGs. It was built to military standards, capable of surviving harsh conditions like submersion and vibration. The GN-1 uses a complex arrangement of lenses, prisms, and mirrors to direct light to the Image Intensifier (I2) tube and then to both eyes, often with green phosphor displays.
