AN/PSQ-20B ENVG

The AN/PSQ-20B ENVG (Enhanced Night Vision Goggle) is a helmet-mounted system that combines traditional Image Intensification (I₂) with Thermal Imaging (IR). Developed by L3Harris and originally ITT, this technology allowed soldiers to see in the dark while detecting hidden heat sources.

The U.S. Military recognized that traditional night vision struggled in deep shadows or dust. They needed a device that fused the sharp detail of green (or white) night vision with the heat detection of thermal cameras. The original PSQ-20 (and PSQ-20A) was fielded in limited numbers. It was revolutionary for its time but suffered from high costs (around $20,000 per unit), a heavy battery pack, and fragile internal parts. The PSQ-20B was created to fix early reliability issues. It featured a more robust internal structure, better mounting options for the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH), and an upgraded thermal overlay. Today, the PSQ-20B paved the way for modern "binocular" systems like the ENVG-B, which feature dual tubes, augmented reality, and wireless weapon syncing.
